boat for a full-day float. The smell of the river settles me. It was almost instant, a familiar peace washing over me as I meandered through the cypress trees and down to the water.

I’ve done a few float trips, mostly down the White River in central Indiana, so while the routine was familiar, the landscape was completely unique. Since we’ve moved to Texas, I’ve made a short list of things I wanted to try. Horseback riding through the hills and two-stepping have yet to be checked off, but catching a Guadalupe bass on the fly was on the agenda for the day.

Field & Home Journal is a reader-supported publication. The perfect place to avoid drawing too much attention to how rusty I felt. After a few casts, and a few small rapids, I was back in the swing of things.

I caught a sunfish in the first few casts, and it felt oddly special. My grandfather passed away late last year, and the first fish I ever caught was with him and my dad at the end of a long dock in Port Clinton, Ohio, just as the sun was sinking over the lake. Four years old, Barbie rod in hand, and as excited as ever. My grandparents were the only ones in my family who had the same affinity for fishing, and discovering that same passion over the years has made me feel more connected to them than ever. I took a minute to hang onto those memories and be grateful for the gift of days spent on the water. We released him, and we were back to the float.

The river was uncharacteristically low that day, and the stretch we fished was busier than usual. A canoe race was happening downstream, and a fair share of folks were practicing on our stretch, too. The blue-green color of the water against the cypress and the long stretches between limestone canyons were just as captivating to me as the fishing. The turtles sunning on the banks would slip silently back into the water as we came by, and the river felt alive with the colors of spring. Between the serene surroundings and the therapeutic rhythm of the casts, I was fully beginning to relax when Hayden hooked into a nice fish.

I immediately was jolted back into the action as he netted a huge Guadalupe bass. We had caught a few largemouth and sunfish to this point, but this moment was the highlight for me. Hayden had never caught one, and we had been trying to make this trip happen for weeks since we arrived in Texas—a little celebration for our five-year wedding anniversary. There’s truly nothing I love more than getting to share moments like this together, pure fun and so special. The fish was beautiful, and after a good-hearted celebration from everyone on the boat, we released it and continued on our way.

We stopped in a little lagoon-like pocket under the shade of a big cypress for lunch and enjoyed some fresh fruit and chicken salad. Lunches on the water always taste 100% better, and at this point it was over 90 degrees, and we felt like we earned it.

We were getting toward the end of the float and came up to a dam. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting when our guide pointed to the bank and had us hop off the boat, rods in tow, and told us he’d meet us at the bottom. We walked down an embankment along the edge of the dam and realized he was intending to take the raft over it.

On a normal flow, the water would be pumping over the edge, and it would be a fairly routine task, but today, the water was only running over the dam just enough to cover it. He inched and pushed the raft up the edge, slowly positioning himself until there was just enough weight to propel it forward, and he slid down all 15 ft at once, landing just like he planned and meeting us with a grin at the bottom to continue the float.

At this point, I was feeling like catching a Guadalupe bass wasn’t in the cards for me. We made several casts in this zone, and nothing was panning out. Throughout the day, I felt like my casts had gotten plenty sharp, but I’d run out of time to make something happen. I must have thrown 15 casts and was about to give up on it altogether. But I decided to throw one more. All at once I felt a tug at the end of the line. I strip set and he was hooked.

Fully expecting a sunfish or a largemouth, I was completely shocked when I netted the small Guadalupe. The only way to end the day.

We finished the float in the blazing heat, picking up the pace, sliding under a few low bridges, some quick rapids, and observing the flood lines along the canyons that towered over our heads. I had an Arnold Palmer reserved in the truck to celebrate, and it was just as good as I hoped.

I love the way that being on the water reminds you to be patient, to be still and intentional, and to enjoy the reward—whether it’s accomplishing what you’re after or the thrill of having to wait until the next run to make it happen. It’s stretches your muscles for endurance and challenges you to stick with it. And whether or not it pans out, there’s always something more to learn on the water. Until next time.

Field & Home Journal is a reader-supported publication. class="fake-button">

Moving to a new place is a lot like staring out over the open ocean on a warm summer night – full of possibility and quiet anticipation for what the turn of the tides might bring. The last few months have carried that same feeling. Leaving a place you love is bittersweet, but there’s something exhilarating about stepping into something new.

Our move to the Texas Hill Country has felt like the perfect storm of those emotions – in the best way. On the heels of winter’s transition into spring, it has been the breath of fresh air we didn’t quite realize we needed. Sometimes it takes a fresh start – the transition of the seasons or a welcomed detour – to bring clarity to a chapter of life you might not have known was waiting.

As we packed up our small home in the coastal south and traded it for a quiet neighborhood of rolling limestone hills, sprawling live oaks and deer wandering through creek beds, I can’t help but think about how important it is to embrace both change and challenge in the same breath. There is something beautiful about allowing yourself to grow and evolve – and learning to let go a little along the way.

As laid-back as I can be, I’ve always carried a bit of Type-A planner in me. Preparing for a season where the next step feels somewhat unplanned can be unsettling. But it keeps bringing me back to a verse in Psalms 119: “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.”

We rarely get to see the full picture of where we’re going, but we’re given God’s direction, presence and strength for each step along the way. I’ve felt that deeply these last few weeks. Even when life is full of exciting transitions, feeling slightly unmoored is normal – and sometimes that’s exactly what we need to flourish.

Learning a New Landscape
<div Maybe it’s because I grew up in North Florida where seasons only exist loosely on paper, or maybe it’s because I tend to experience the world more by my senses than by the calendar. For me, a change in season is something I can feel in my bones. And lately, it feels like spring has arrived.

As much as I love the fresh start of a new year, I’ve always felt spring marks the beginning of true change. Something about the warmer days and longer evenings invites a reset – of our home, our routines and our priorities.

Moving to Texas has felt like the perfect beginning to that reset.

In the mornings, the light moves slowly across the hills and filters through the oaks, while coos of mourning doves echo through the trees. The dogs pacing by the fence eager for the day ahead, and the air carries the unmissable feeling that winter is a thing of the past.

A Different Kind of Home
<div wading down the creek — ground me instantly. The small creek behind our home has been a quiet haven, an instant release from the pressures of the day. A tiny postcard from our time in the Lowcountry.

These Field Guides are an invitation to slow down and connect more deeply — with a region, an experience, a craft or a season. They’re a brief escape into landscapes, traditions, and the small, often overlooked rituals that give life character and soul. I’m by no means an expert; these guides are simply written reflections of my own experiences and the places where I’ve felt most grounded — where I’ve had the chance to brush up against what feels like the heart of something good.

The Charleston & Lowcountry Field Guide feels especially meaningful to me because it has been home for the last five years, and because I’m not a native. I was welcomed wholeheartedly by the community, the landscape, and the culture, and given a small taste of what makes this place endure. I hope this lens — colored by marsh grass and roseate spoonbills, live oaks and golden evenings at the docks — is something you can carry with you. Whether you’re a local or an out-of-towner, there’s something we can all learn from a little taste of the Lowcountry.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" linked to life here. Islands and peninsulas are wrapped in water on every side as the sea pours through the landscape, cushioning each pocket of land. Marsh grass and winding creeks form both a barrier and a refuge — protecting wildlife and shaping daily rhythms. The connection to the water is constant and undeniable.

To truly experience the marsh, it helps to leave town for a while. Head north toward Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Drive south and explore the ACE Basin. Let conservationists and locals guide you. I still remember my first trip with Coastal Expeditions out to Bull Island — seeing the marsh untouched, birds undisturbed, oysters thriving, and some of the most beautiful shells I’ve ever found scattered along the shore. It felt like a pure connection to the wildness of it all, and a reminder that it’s something worth protecting.

That lesson was echoed again and again during my time learning from the Charleston Waterkeeper: the water here is what keeps both the city and the marshes alive.

The tides dictate a little bit of everything in Charleston. With an average swing of five to six feet each day, you’ll feel their presence — especially in the air on a low tide. Fishing follows the same rhythm. Catching a tailing redfish on a summer flood tide is a rite of passage, one I still replay in my mind: reading the water, presenting the fly, the quiet moment of the release. Learn the tide swings, and you’ll learn how to move through the water with intention.

Much of what I know about the water here came from my time working at Marsh Wear Clothing and from the people who took the time to teach me. It was a gift. Whether you’re looking to participate — joining annual tournaments like the Holy City Tarpon Tournament or the Lady Red Rendezvous — or simply want to gear up for your own pursuits, a stop by their King Street store offers a deeper look into the culture that surrounds the water here.

Charleston’s history is undeniable, but beyond its place among America’s oldest cities, the legacy of working water remains deeply present. Country Cooking – A taste of Southern cuisine and hospitality

There’s no shortage of hidden gems when it comes to Southern cooking — places where hospitality feels instinctive and the connection to the land and sea is woven into every plate. For the sake of this guide, we’ll focus on a handful of gathering places and pit stops that feel like stepping straight into the heart of the Lowcountry — from the moment you open the front door to the last bite of shrimp and grits.

Starting north, T.W. Graham & Co. is nestled in the quaint coastal village of McClellanville. I always notice the oak trees first — a peaceful welcome before you pull in. A weathered sign over the door reads, eat local shrimp here, and they mean it. McClellanville’s shrimp docks — home to Carolina Seafood and Livingston’s Bulls Bay Seafood, collectively supply much of Charleston County’s shrimp. It goes without saying: order the friend shrimp. And don’t leave without a slice of key lime pie for the road.

Heading south towards the peninsula, the drive carries you through the Francis Marion Forest, past long stretches of pine and sweetgrass basket stands, before delivering you to Awendaw. Here, SEWE Outpost stands as a gateway to the wild coastal south – an iconic stop and keeper of tradition. From crab traps to homemade country ham biscuits, it transcends its appearance as a gas station the moment you walk through the doors. Grab a MoonPie moon pie and an Arnold Palmer, and don’t miss the hot biscuit or fried chicken sandwich from the back. If there’s one stop you make on this list, make it this one.

In downtown Charleston, Leon’s Oyster Shop offers a glimpse into a world gone by. Once owned by Leon Ravenel, this neighborhood staple has preserved the bones of the old body shop that once inhabited its walls. Serving fried chicken, oysters and cheap beer, it’s the kind of place you return to — again and again.

Just off the peninsula on the northeast side of James Island, Ellis Creek Fish Camp sits quietly along the marsh. As the name suggests, this casual rustic spot serves everything from whole fried flounder to po’ boys, paired with some of the most expansive sunset views in town. Arrive early, expect a line and plan to stay awhile — it’s as much about the setting as it is the shrimp and grits.

Out on Folly Beach, Bowen’s Island is a true Lowcountry institution. From Frogmore stew to local oysters and fried shrimp, the menu reads like the greatest hits of coastal cooking. Come straight from the water, gather at the boathouse or tiki bar, or watch oyster roasting in the oyster room — there’s no shortage of charm here, only reasons to linger.

Beyond restaurants, the Lowcountry offers abundant access to ingredients inspired by the landscape. Marsh Hen Mill immediately comes to mind. Located on Edisto Island, they specialize in freshly milled heirloom grains, preserving southern foodways and the timeless craft of stone-ground milling for generations to come.

Hum Grocery at Historic P.M. King’s is another meaningful stop — rooted in preservation, community and deep respect for place. Highlighting regional grab-and-go favorites and championing a shop-local mentality, places like these continue to sustain the culture, history and hospitality that define the Lowcountry.

Field Notes:

Build pitstops into your outdoor rituals — SEWE Outpost before running dogs, Hum Grocery after a long day on the water.

Source your ingredients locally, and support the establishments doing the same.

Linger a little longer around the table; some of the best moments happen after the plates are cleared.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Charleston’s Sporting Culture – a place for sporting clays, bird dogs and the art they inspire

Sporting traditions found us in Charleston. From the pine forests to clay stands, the culture here is quietly connected to shooting sports and the lifestyle that surrounds them. Before living in Charleston, I had never shot a shotgun — never even held one. But from my first day on the clays course, I knew it was something that would stay with me.

The weight of the wood against your chest. The calm and patience required to track a clay as it glides across the sky and disappears into the trees. Pastimes like this breathe fresh life into me, pulling focus away from everything else — except for the next pull. We spent much of our time at Bluefield Shooting Club, though there are countless five-stand and sporting clays courses scattered throughout the Lowcountry, each offering its own rhythm and setting.

Charleston is also where our bird dogs entered the picture — all three of them. Maybe it was my husband’s first inclination towards a dog, or maybe it was the all-consuming obsession that followed that set us on this path. Either way, I’m endlessly grateful. While most of our hunting trips take place beyond the Lowcountry, it was the sporting culture here that inspired those pursuits and shaped the way we move through them.

For those who live and breathe this life, a visit to the Sportsman’s Gallery on King Street is essential. One of only three locations nationwide, the Charleston gallery showcases art inspired by the South — from fly fishing scenes to bobwhite quail and upland traditions. With works spanning the 19th century and beyond, it’s a place that doesn’t just reflect the sporting life — it deepens it, and often sends you back outdoors inspired for the next pursuit.

Field Notes:

Make time for the clays course; it will clear your mind more than you expect.

Get a bird dog and take them hunting — few things have shaped my life more.

Collect art inspired by the outdoors, or learn to create something of your own as a way to stay rooted in place and tradition.

<div — to get lost in the beauty of landscape and its culture — there are also rituals to be lived. Traditions inspired by Charleston that take a little time, a little effort, and a willingness to linger. This guide won’t tell you how to do them, only offer a collection of moments you can make your own:

Host an oyster roast: Do it near the marsh if you can — maybe dockside, maybe under the oaks. Take in the smell of the smoke, the sound of gathering, dogs underfoot. Let it stretch long into the evening.

End the day on an old porch: Front or back it doesn’t matter. Find a rocking chair, listen to the creek and watch the sun sink low.

Catch a redfish on fly: Flood tide or a low tide, in the heat of summer or the dead of winter. Whether you succeed or not, slow down. Learning the water is the reward.

Go looking for glass bottles in the marsh: There are little pieces of history everywhere, half-buried and waiting. Go find them.

Send time at the sporting clays course: Morning or afternoon. Rent the golf cart, bring snacks, make a day out of it.

Take it slow during slack tide: When the fishing slows, pull the boats together. Swim in the creek, share good food, and enjoy the pause.

Go crabbing in the creek: A Lowcountry tradition. Catch a blue crab to add it to the boil.

Grab tickets for SEWE: If you’re looking for the full expression of sporting life and culture, there’s no better weekend.

Tour the working land and water: The heart of this place is lives in the connection between food, its source, and the people who steward it. Visit an oyster operation. Stop at a farm stand. Source locally.

Have a lowboil at Sandy Point: Take the skiffs out with your people and watch the sun set over the marsh. Add a campfire. Maybe stay the night.. If you do, I hope you see the dolphins feeding at dusk — my most meaningful days here always ended that way.

<a class="image-link spoonbills, every time a redfish cruises the creek, every time a fiddler crab climbs a stalk of grass, a little more of this place is settles into me. The Lowcountry is rich with character and life — beautiful, grounding and generous in what it offers to those willing to pay attention.

If it’s taught me anything, it’s that slowing down, gathering well, and feeling connected to home begins with learning the landscape, the craftsmen, the people and the traditions that shape it. It’s about honoring seasons and tides and the tides as they come and go.

This field guide is only a small collection of thoughts, experiences, and moments — but I hope it helps you We cut tight around each bend, chasing last light and a rising flood tide.

When we nudge the bow into the grass, everything falls quiet – except the marsh.

Fiddler crabs cling to stalks. Snails plop into the water. Mud pops and breathes like it has a pulse of its own. Two pink spoonbills pass overhead, wing to wing.

And we wait.

A snack box that passes for charcuterie. Topo chicos with lime sweating in the heat. The tide inches higher. The golden glow of late afternoon gives way to the first shades of dusk.

The flooded flat is glass calm. Then it happens.

A single tail waves through the grass. One cast. One strip set. And the dance has begun.

The Lowcountry has been our home for five years and it’s become a part of me in ways I never expected.

It’s the easy days. The way the seasons cycle like the tides. The smell of the marsh in the late afternoon. Dockside dinners and the oyster roasts at Sandy Point. The food, the culture, the craftsmanship – the connectedness of it all.

Maybe it started because I joined the Marsh Wear team. Maybe it was the community of people who live out the soul and spirit of this place. Or maybe it’s simply the Lowcountry charm everyone talks about.

All I know is it truly is as special as they say.

It’s where I caught my first redfish – and all the ones that came after. Where we brought home our first bird dog (and the next, and the next). Where I learned to shuck an oyster, host a Lowcountry boil, shoot sporting clays, throw pottery and build things with my hands that feel like they’ll last.

It’s where good music and creekside fires linger long past dark. Where I met people who live deeply connected to the outdoors and taught me to do the same.

This place is texture and grit and good times.

It’s the way an oyster roast is rite of passage. Rustic wooden tables. Smoke wafting from the fire. The sound of laughter echoing through the hundred-year-old oaks.

Everyone gathered under the stars or dockside lights.

Our best ones were always at the island by our house — a quick trip by boat, surrounded by neighbors, friends, and good dogs.

Oyster knives in hand. Maybe a few squeezes of fresh lemon. Maybe some Cholula. Always a few too many oysters. It’s about more than the tradition or the history. It’s the way people gather.

Those moments and all the ones between have given me more than I ever expected.

Here are a few lessons I’ll carry with me:

Preserve heritage and tradition.

The Lowcountry holds tightly to its past infusing the present with the character, richness and legacy of generations gone by. There’s a steadiness in that – a grounding you can feel.

Make the outdoors the backdrop of your life.

Take the boat out to the oyster roast. Host your next dinner by the creek. Meet your people in the field.

Notice God in the smallest details.

A fish taking the fly. A bobwhite whistling through the pines. A bird dog locked on point. Music drifting in the wind.

Make time for community.

The people here are the real gift – welcoming, easygoing, and the best storytellers you’ll ever meet.

Learn a craft that uses your hands.

For me it started with cooking and moved on to pottery. Something about working slowly, patiently, with natural materials made me feel more connected to the place.

Warm nights walking down to the marsh behind our house. Photoshoots at Bowen’s Island. Kicking off the summer with a Lowcountry boil. Country biscuits and an Arnold Palmer at the SEWE outpost after running the dogs.

It’s the little routines. The traditions. The people.

And on the ride back in after a long day on the water, I’ll watch the sun sink into the marsh while the moon and stars begin to glow over the water.

I’ll think about this season. All the nights just like it.

And as much as I’ll miss them, I’ll be even more grateful for what they gave me – and for the way the Lowcountry has shaped me with these simple lessons.

If this felt like home to you, subscribe to Field & Home Journal for more essays, field notes, and the rhythms of a life lived outdoors.

An Editor’s Note

On the heart behind Field & Home Journal

Kait Dobbins

I can still see the steam rising off our setter’s white coat, usually a stark white, now damp with dew, a little sand and more than his fair share of burs. It’s where grit and perseverance mingle with peace and reconnection.

I stumbled into this world slowly – through faith and my line of work, through fishing and failing, through the sporting community, through my husband and our first bird dog. Memories of my first sharptail grouse. A week spent camping on the prairie. Catching redfish on a flood tide. Documenting craftsmen making knives, furniture and art from lived experiences on land and water. A series of small moments and lived memories that became what I now consider to be one of the greatest passions and gifts of my life.

Field & Home Journal is a collection of essays, field notes, conversations with craftsmen, wild game recipes, and photo journals exploring the enduring traditions of the sporting life and their intersection with the rhythms of home.

Shaped both by my own experiences and the stories of men and women who live at the intersection between the field and home each day, this journal reflects my upbringing in northeast Florida, my years in Charleston’s Lowcountry, and now the Texas HIll Country. These places have ingrained in me a deep respect for stewardship – of land, animals, food and community – and a belief that we were made by God to work, to rest, and to find meaning and connection to Him in both.

As seasons pass, this collection of stories is meant to document the enduring values and spirit of the American outdoorsman – a legacy that ages soulfully with time.

As we continue to grow and expand the collection, the essays, field notes and podcast conversations will always be available to read, save and collect. For readers who would like to support the journal more directly, subscriptions offer access to our full Field Guides, wild cooked and caught recipes, and companion pieces meant to be saved and returned to season after season.

As the birds flushed, I watched Ernie hold steady for one more passing glance and at a single word he bursted forward again, his white feathered tail the only trace of the speed at which he covered ground in search of the next find.
